The Viscosity Process Analyser determines the viscosity in Newtonian liquids on continue basis. Most hydrocarbon liquids are Newtonian fluids (according to Newton's law). The measuring principle is based on the Hagen-Poisseuille equation.
The pressure drop over a restriction is proportional to the viscosity if volume flow and temperature are constant, and vice versa. Continuous volume flow is forced by a pneumatically-driven metering cylinder giving a constant pressure drop over a restriction in a temperature controlled bath; the piston flow is a meter for viscosity. Determination of viscosity is of importance for characterization and pump ability of hydrocarbons.
